OUR MISSION
Growing up as a musician who performed in renowned concert halls, I learned how each piece had a special meaning and acted as a special language that connected with the audience. Music isn’t just a series or compiled sounds, but rather a non-verbal way to tell a story. I’ve seen the audience’s tears, joyful laughter, and excitement, but started to learn more about the harsh reality of the deaf/HH being left out of this exposure.
My project is programmed using the coding language, ChucK, which allows the audio to visual transformation happen in real time. When audio enters to my computer while my program is running, it will automatically display visuals based on certain qualities of that specific audio. I wanted to show my project to the deaf community as a novel accessibility tool.
We utilize these visuals to evoke emotion as great examples of visual stimuli that will help engage in the deaf participant’s auditory cortex and supplement the viewer's perception of the current song playing. This approach will help the deaf/HH audience be able to see and feel music through peripheral vision.
